Sometime this offseason, when you’\u0080\u0099re staring out the window waiting for spring<\/strong> or you’\u0080\u0099re watching one of our lesser sports<\/em>, you’\u0080\u0099re going to start thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n

The offseason is good for that, and baseball thoughts are usually good thoughts, especially if your team made the playoffs. You’\u0080\u0099ll think back on a game that got them there — maybe one that they had no business winning and in some cases, proved to be the difference between going on and going home, or home-field advantage and a long plane trip.<\/p>\n

Then there are those other thoughts. The game that they should have had — either they blew it or they couldn’\u0080\u0099t take care of the team that was supposed to be an easy mark on the schedule.<\/p>\n

There were 2,429 games this year to think back on — the baseball gods owe us one more next time we see them — and a few of them were\u00a0that game<\/i>\u00a0for a team that just missed or a team that just made it.<\/p>\n

On the sidewalks during Fashion Week,\u00a0lewk<\/em>-wearers will attempt some styling tricks that might look incredible in a picture, but don’t necessarily work for the real world. Take that whole thing about\u00a0throwing your jacket over your shoulders<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 at this point, it’s a street style clich\u00e9. But leave it to fashion people to turn toward something even more challenging<\/span><\/del> as trends start to tire…<\/p>\n

We call it the forced shoulder exposure. Whether you’re wearing your jackets around your elbows or pulling a wide neckline down and around a shoulder, manipulating your clothes to look like they’re already halfway off has made its way from a runway styling<\/a> trend to a Fashion Week attendee trend. If we read the patterns, that means you’ll probably be seeing a real-life version<\/span><\/span> on the street in just a few months…or maybe in the mirror?<\/p>\n

I can see why she wouldn\u2019t be into talking to me, another nosy reporter. So, I’m pleasantly surprised when she arrives and greets me with a warm hug that lasts longer than I expect it to. Her raven hair and impossibly long eyelashes are every bit as dazzling in person as they are in her glamorous Instagram selfies<\/span>. Save for a bit of sparkle shadow on her lids, she appears to be makeup-free. She is only 5-foot-5, but she seems statuesque in her cropped sweater, high-waisted leggings, and heels. The outfit gives the illusion that she is nearly all legs.<\/p>\n

After the hug, Gomez sits down, tucks her hair behind her ear, folds her hands \u2014 nails painted a deep, slate gray and carefully filed into pointy talons \u2014 and waits for the first question. She\u2019s all business. After spending years being judged in the press and media-trained by the Disney machine, she has built up a protective wall that can seem impenetrable<\/span><\/span>. Finding out who she really is \u2014 beyond the gossip \u2014 is like digging for fossils with a Q-tip.<\/p>\n

But by 20 minutes in, we\u2019re getting somewhere. We talk about the complexities of female self-confidence \u2014 at best, it\u2019s schizophrenic \u2014 and we laugh about an Amy Schumer<\/a> joke that she roughly translates as, \u201cSome mornings you wake up and you’re like, 'Everything about me is amazing!’ And the next morning you’re like, 'How did anybody ever sleep with me?’\u201d<\/p>\n

After an hour, Selena Gomez is giving me a tour of her tattoos<\/span><\/span>. There are six in all: a tiny music note on her right wrist was her first. \u201cI wanted something small to test the waters,\u201d she says. \u201cNow I\u2019m addicted.\u201d There\u2019s the initial \u201cG\u201d behind her left ear for her 2-year-old sister, Gracie; her mother\u2019s birthday in Roman numerals on the back of her neck; a Bible verse on her right hip that reads, \u201cI can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.\u201d The date on her left hip represents<\/a> when she met one of her best friends eight years ago, and the phrase in Arabic on her back means, \u201cLove yourself first.\u201d She\u2019s contemplating getting a seventh tattoo<\/span><\/span> to celebrate her own revival \u2014 the album and the personal reinvention.<\/p>\n

But a day or two after, you look about you, and prick your ears in this self-same.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

For all her supposed skittishness, Gomez actually wants to show the world<\/span><\/span> who she is \u2014 and, in the coming months, she\u2019ll have plenty of opportunity to do that. Besides the new album, she\u2019s joining The Voice<\/span><\/em> as an advisor, handpicked by Gwen Stefani for her \u201cconfidence and creativity,\u201d Stefani said via email, adding, \u201cSelena is incredibly<\/a> passionate about her craft, and her talent far exceeds what one would expect from a woman her age.” Gomez will also appear in four upcoming movies, including a hush-hush part in December\u2019s financial-crisis drama The Big Short, starring Brad Pitt and Christian Bale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And, in a role that seems to be the definition of „giant leap,” she portrays a Depression-era young mother in the onscreen adaptation of John Steinbeck<\/a>\u2019s In Dubious Battle, a performance her director (and Spring Breakers co-star) James Franco<\/strong><\/span> promises will reveal the depth of her acting talent.
\n\u201cIf she were allowed to play [more] roles beyond just teenagers with teen interests, she would show her innate maturity and strength,\u201d Franco said via email. \u201cShe has had to face pressures and scrutiny<\/span><\/span> at a young age that most never face in a lifetime. So when she is able to display the strength and leadership she has developed, she shines.\u201d<\/p>\n

So yes, you might say this is a big moment for Selena Gomez<\/a>. After a rough 12 months, she\u2019s picking herself back up and taking control of her career.<\/p>\n

Not bad for a 23-year-old who got her big break dancing with a plushy.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all over\u00a0Revival. Before \u201cGood for You\u201d was released<\/span><\/h4>\n

The video to that song features her rolling around on a couch, the floor, and in the shower. The artwork for the album\u2019s cover is a black-and-white portrait of her sitting cross-legged and topless<\/span>, staring into the camera. It\u2019s not a come-hither stare. The expression seems to say, with self-assured attitude,\u00a0\u201cYeah\u2026what?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
